Not your average still life painting class -- with Greg Pettit

Picture
Kicking off our Summer Art Class Series, Gallery Lucid is hosting a dynamic, 3-part still life painting class with a twist and an end goal of creating a still life painting which incorporates each artist's choice of visionary, fantasy, psychedelic, or abstract painting. The workshop is being taught by instructor and visionary artist Greg Pettit. The three weekly classes begin Thursday, June 21st, 2018 and will be from 6pm to 10pm each night ($250 for all 3 evenings, together).
Some snacks and beverages will be provided and Black Star Coop is directly across the street if the needs become greater.

WORKSHOP DETAILS from Greg Pettit:

Picture
"The workshop will be a Still Life Class for beginners, intermediate, or advanced painting students centered on challenging students to create their own references and then using those to incorporate elements of realism into fantasy, visionary, or even abstract painting. (I'll be teaching from the perspective of using acrylics, but if you are a die hard oil painter that's fine, too.) Observational painting from life is a great way for honing the fundamental skills needed to take one's painting technique to a higher level. This WON'T be painting bowls of fruit or flower vases.

"Each student will create their own diorama by constructing a scene out of various objects and materials that will serve as a template to base their paintings off of. I will walk each student through the steps of constructing a reference with lighting, choosing and developing a composition, creating an underpainting, and working in color.

"In the first class the student will construct a reference that they can use as their subject, make some thumbnail drawings of possible compositions, and then work on a 3 tone monochromatic underpainting.

"In the second class we'll begin working in full color, going over elements of color theory, and instruction on mixing a palette to successfully develop color harmony within a painting.

"The third class will be geared towards finishing the piece. We'll be adding final layers of color and detail and having a quick critique at the end to discuss our progress."

Supply List:
  • Canvas, heavy weighted art paper, or illustration board, at least 12” x 18” in size but not larger than 24” x 36”. If you're using paper you'll need a drawing board or large piece of cardboard to mount your paper on
  • A set of acrylic paints and brushes (Liquitex or Golden are both great brands)
  • An easel to work on, either standing or table top easel
  • A container for cleaning brushes
  • A small box to build a diorama in (shoebox-size or slightly larger)
  • 3 small objects that you find interesting as possible elements in a painting. I'll also be bringing things that students can choose from
  • A lighting source (small clamp lamp would be ideal)
  • A sketchbook and pencils to draft out ideas
  • A phone with a camera
  • Hot glue, glue, etc. for creating the diorama.  (We will try to have a glue gun available)

ARTIST INSTRUCTOR GREG PETTIT

Straddling the line between abstraction and polished rendering of sensible forms, Greg strives to create imagery that exists within a refracted sense of space and time. His work is characterized by depictions of abstract landscapes, transparent machine-like forms, fantastic creatures, and geometrically defined sentinel-like structures.

Greg Pettit is a contemporary artist from Plano who moved to Austin to study at UT and graduated with a BFA in Studio Art in 2008.

He first began painting in 2006, and by late 2007 had abandoned most of his prior artistic direction to move forward with a body of work that corresponded to his growing fascination with the terror and beauty of trans-dimensional realities.
