Visionary Artist Meetup at Gallery Lucid

Join us on the 21st of August for Gallery Lucid's monthly Meetup.
Picture
This gathering is to bring artists together to meet, collaborate, and network in an environment that fosters creativity and collaboration. You are welcome to bring an easel, brushes, pastels, etc. Novice to master, all are welcome.

If you plan to sit and sketch/paint/write, please know we are very limited on chairs/stools and it might be wise to bring what you need.

We should have an LED Black Light if you are working in a black light medium.

We will have some sake, snacks, and we might break out some of the consciousness toys. Please feel free to BYO if there is something special you would like for yourself or to share.

If, for some reason, the meetup gets too large or we run out of libations, Black Star Coop is directly across the street.

If it runs long because we're having fun, so be it. I made it 4 hours instead of two because 2 is barely enough time to settle in to paint. lol

There will be no charge for this meetup, but there will be a jar for donations to help pay for food, drinks, etc.

Picture
Have you experienced the magic of collaborative creation?  Do you wish to share the inspiring work that cooperation and co-creation produces? To celebrate the fascinating growing trend of artists collaborating on projects, Gallery Lucid is dedicating its next show to collaborative works of art: works created by two or more artists. Submit your works now through August 19th for a chance to be a part of this multi-faceted show!

The show is set to run from September 8th to October 14th. Please note: This show runs through both ACL weekends, and will be advertised throughout the the run of the city-wide festival.

Gallery Lucid focuses on works that are in the realm of visionary, surreal and psychedelic, and submissions should be representative of these genres. These genres are, however, wide and open to great interpretation: all are welcome to apply.

ACCEPTED MEDIA:
  • Open for any subject matter, but please keep the unique nature of our healing center in mind.
  • We are accepting original artwork in all media
(contact Gallery Lucid for specifics on sculptures/pottery/jewelry/lighting/video/etc.)

  • Opening Night will feature live music, refreshments, and all artists in attendance.
  • At least one additional event to showcase the artists will be scheduled during the run of the show. Each artist will be expected to attend at least one of these events. Austin Artist Spotlight - Eris Gentle

Picture

Through sculpture, painting, film and performance arts, Eris Gentle expresses the intensity and absurdity of human existence using everyday objects and forms to express everything from spiritual awakening to madness.

Eris is a multimedia artist who hails from New Orleans, but is now based in Austin.  As she appreciates the intensity and dynamic nature of life and uses painting, drawing, clay sculpture, film, and performance to tell her stories and to challenge our views on the nature of why we are here.
Picture"I" by Eris Gentle 12"x9" Acrylic Ink
Her work acknowledges the surreal elements and underlying enchantments in everyday objects, landscapes, and human forms. She's fascinated by subjects that normally don't come up in conversation like the phenomenon of dreaming, psychedelic experiences, spiritual awakening, and how we understand this reality.  Her creations appear to be an intentional invitation to generate discussions about such intriguing ideas.

You can check work out at Gallery Lucid until August 27, 2018 and find more examples of her work on her Instagram page or her website.

Artist Spotlight: Evan Wagoner/"Axiom"

Picture
Axiom is a classically trained artist who has utilized his art in an attempt to reveal the internal elements of subconscious realms for others to experience.

He believes variety and the challenge of "what could be" to be important aspects of artistic courage and in that vein, his artist statement is one sentence:

"The creative potential within is our greatest alley in the search for our own personal truth."

Artist Spotlight - Rosemary Allen

Picture

Self-trained and influenced by her time with CoSM, Rosemary's works are an invocation of healing and transformation emanating from mediation and energetic processing

Picture
"The Messenger" by Rosemary Allen (2018) 24x48 inch acrylic on linen
Rosemary Allen is an Austin artist who was raised in Black Creek, WI and moved to Texas at age 15. She has been drawing and painting since childhood and has always had a passion for expressing her creativity from painting, to acting, to even designing and sewing her own dresses. She is a self taught painter with no formal training other than occasional guidance from her Mother (Patty Allen) who is also a painter. She attended a Visionary Art Intensive with Alex and Allison Grey in 2014 but has honed her skills mostly from her own trial and error. She currently works with watercolours, acrylics, and oil and has been residing in Austin, Texas since 2013.

Rosemary's mystical work invokes the power to heal and transform.  The subject matter portrays a direct reflection of self-work and emotional processing. She views art as a meditative practice, and believes the energy a painting radiates directly affects a viewer's psyche. Each of Rosemary's spirit animal paintings represent a state of transformation and growth as they assist in the progression of maturity and awareness of the human experience.

Artist Spotlight-Melanie Farris

Melanie Farris is a visionary artist based in Austin, TX. She began drawing and painting after a friend introduced her to sacred geometry in 2012. Since then she has been on a journey to create visionary art to brighten the world! She is inspired by the mysteries of the cosmos and geometric patterns found throughout nature, just to name a few. Creating art began as a meditative therapy and blossomed into a thriving passion. Her paintings are meant to illicit calm, happiness, and reflection.

She works primarily in acrylics and creates hypnotic paintings intended to take the viewer to the unknown. Her art represents the familiar and that which is alien. Viewers may be compelled to touch her textured creations, inspired by naturally occurring harmonies and patterns in nature. Her paintings are meant to be meditative, eliciting calm and reflection.

Not your average still life painting class -- with Greg Pettit

Picture
Kicking off our Summer Art Class Series, Gallery Lucid is hosting a dynamic, 3-part still life painting class with a twist and an end goal of creating a still life painting which incorporates each artist's choice of visionary, fantasy, psychedelic, or abstract painting. The workshop is being taught by instructor and visionary artist Greg Pettit. The three weekly classes begin Thursday, June 21st, 2018 and will be from 6pm to 10pm each night ($250 for all 3 evenings, together).
Some snacks and beverages will be provided and Black Star Coop is directly across the street if the needs become greater.

Sign up here!

WORKSHOP DETAILS from Greg Pettit:

Picture
"The workshop will be a Still Life Class for beginners, intermediate, or advanced painting students centered on challenging students to create their own references and then using those to incorporate elements of realism into fantasy, visionary, or even abstract painting. (I'll be teaching from the perspective of using acrylics, but if you are a die hard oil painter that's fine, too.) Observational painting from life is a great way for honing the fundamental skills needed to take one's painting technique to a higher level. This WON'T be painting bowls of fruit or flower vases.

"Each student will create their own diorama by constructing a scene out of various objects and materials that will serve as a template to base their paintings off of. I will walk each student through the steps of constructing a reference with lighting, choosing and developing a composition, creating an underpainting, and working in color.

"In the first class the student will construct a reference that they can use as their subject, make some thumbnail drawings of possible compositions, and then work on a 3 tone monochromatic underpainting.

Artist Spotlight - Greg Pettit

Picture
Greg Pettit is a contemporary artist from Plano, TX. In 2003 he moved to Austin, eventually enrolling at the University of Texas College of Fine Arts. He graduated with a BFA in Studio Art in 20008.
Greg first began painting in 2006 and by late 2007 and had abandoned most of his prior artistic direction to move forward with a body of work that corresponded to his growing fascination with the terror and beauty of trans-dimensional realities.
Straddling the line between abstraction and polished rendering of sensible forms, Greg strives to create imagery that exists within a refracted sense of space and time. His work is characterized by depictions of abstract landscapes, transparent machine-like forms, fantastic creatures, and geometrically defined sentinel-like structures.
